It all started in 2016 with 2 goats in an overgrown backyard... We didn't bring them home planning to start a farm, we really just wanted some brush cleared. But the joy we found working with animals spurred our passion for livestock husbandry, land stewardship, and self-sufficiency. A few goats and a couple chickens later, our "hobby" was producing income. So with the goal of becoming more sustainable, we decided to tighten our bootstraps and expand into a working farm. Now on our 8th year and 3rd property, we've grown from a couple of backyard goats to over 100 head of livestock on as many mountaintop acres.
Navigating the learning curves of first-generation farming while juggling full-time jobs and 2 toddlers has been challenging to say the least, but along the way flexibility and diversity have been key. With that in mind, our primary focus over the years has shifted from the backyard hobby goats "that started it all" to American Blackbelly sheep, Pineywoods cattle, and Narragansett turkeys. To prevent too many of our eggs from being stockpiled into too few baskets, we also dabble in honey, table egg, and hatching egg production. While we still keep a handful of sentimental hobby goats that call our farm home, we've found that sheep, cattle, poultry, and bees align best with our long-term goals of self-sufficiency and sustainability.
Now nestled atop Straight Mountain on the border of St Claire and Blount County, we're slowly but surely settling into our forever farm and steadily expanding operations to ensure a more sustainably self-sufficient future for our family, neighbors, and community.
